Start Where There’s Energy: Leading Change That Lasts

Tom Hashem's Tip of the Week
Each week, SAFe Connect members share insights that move the Agile community forward. This week’s Tip of the Week comes from  Tom Hashem , a transformation coach who has brought SAFe to the Navy, Air Force, and beyond. His lesson: big change starts small—and with purpose.

1. Start Where There’s Interest.

“In large, complex environments, not everything is ready to change at once. Focus where there’s energy and curiosity, and let early wins build confidence.”

2. Lead with Purpose.

“When people understand why they’re changing, engagement follows naturally. Clarity of purpose creates alignment, trust, and lasting cultural change.”

3. Model the Mindset.

“Even when leadership isn’t fully engaged, stay steady. Guide, inform, and model Agile behaviors. Every conversation plants a seed that may grow later.”
