Each Monday we shine a light on a member of the SAFe community. On Wednesday, that same member shares their Tip of the Week—a practical piece of advice, a proven ritual, or a guiding principle to help you and your teams move forward. This week, our spotlight member Phil Gardiner offers three insights from his experience applying SAFe in complex environments. Tip of the Week, courtesy of Phil Gardiner: Anchor in Outcomes, Not the Framework
1. Focus on the destination, not the vehicle.
I tell people that SAFe is the vehicle, not the destination. When you take a road trip, you want to trust your vehicle, but you’re not talking about it the entire ride. It’s the same with SAFe. Stop talking about the framework itself and start focusing on the mission and the business outcomes it helps you reach faster.
2. Start your day with clarity.
My go-to productivity ritual is deceptively simple: before diving into the day, I write down the two or three outcomes that matter most. Not the 30 tasks, not the flood of emails—just the two or three things that, if completed, would make the day a success. That clarity, combined with deliberate breaks to reset, has been the single best habit for sustaining focus in complex environments.
3. Best advice: stop saying “SAFe says…”
When I started working with government teams, I noticed that coaches were constantly saying, “SAFe says X” or “SAFe says Y.” That often left leaders thinking the framework was rigid and prescriptive. But SAFe, by design, is a framework to be customized. My advice is simple: anchor conversations in outcomes instead of rules. That shift makes all the difference.
