This week, Chinita Davis shares why one of the most effective ways I’ve found to navigate complexity is to stop measuring progress by how busy everyone looks and start managing how work actually flows through the system.
💡 Tip of the Week: Manage Flow, Not Busyness
In complex environments, it’s easy for teams to become overwhelmed by competing priorities, dependencies, and constant change. One practice that has consistently helped me is creating a shared view of upcoming commitments, aging work, dependencies, risks, and scope movement.
Once the work is visible, I focus the conversation around three simple questions:
- What needs to finish next?
- What’s preventing it from finishing?
- What decision is needed, and from whom?
I’ve found that teams often don’t struggle because they lack effort. They struggle because work becomes invisible, priorities aren’t clear, or dependencies emerge too late.
That’s why I try to keep the tactical side simple: define readiness before work enters the system, limit work in progress, make dependencies visible early, and clearly separate committed work from emerging work. When teams do these things consistently, flow improves naturally.
The SAFe Big Picture is one resource I return to when these conversations get complicated. I don’t think of it simply as a diagram. I use it as a conversation starter to connect real challenges around alignment, prioritization, dependencies, decision-making, and flow to the practices that can help.
I also remind myself to choose progress over perfection. Waiting for perfect information can delay the learning that would make the outcome better. I’d rather create clarity, take the next responsible step, gather feedback, and adapt.
One reminder captures this for me: If everything is important and everything is in progress, nothing is truly flowing.
The goal isn’t to keep everyone busy. It’s to help the right work finish and value move forward.
