Each week in SAFe Connect, we share one practical tip from a member of the community to help you apply SAFe in more meaningful ways.
This week, Gowri Goli challenges us to move beyond literal implementations and focus on choosing the patterns that match our unique context.
💡 Tip of the Week: Implement SAFe Intentionally, Not Literally
One practical tip I give people applying SAFe in a complex environment is this: don’t implement SAFe literally—implement it intentionally. SAFe gives you patterns, but the real skill is knowing which ones matter for your context and which ones you can simplify.
SAFe invests heavily in understanding how the world of delivery is changing, and the Framework reflects that. But every client has different constraints, cultures, and levels of maturity. So instead of asking “Does SAFe apply here?”, I ask “Which SAFe patterns solve the problem we have right now?”
For example, in one complex environment, PI Planning was too large to run as a single event, so we adapted it into a federated model with shared objectives and local breakouts. The principles stayed the same; the mechanics changed.
That’s the tactical tip: start with SAFe, then contextualize it. Use the Framework as a source of proven patterns, but apply your consulting judgment to tailor it to the client’s ways of working. SAFe is applicable in any context—the art is in how you adapt it.
