One lesson has consistently changed how I approach SAFe: always start with why.
It's easy to become focused on the work itselfâthe backlog, the plans, the ceremonies, and the deliverables. But when we lose sight of the customer, the business problem, and the purpose behind the work, we often end up optimizing activity instead of outcomes.
I try to keep a few principles front and center:
- Focus on the customer, the business, and the problem you're trying to solve.
- Think about the whole system and the long-term health of the organization, not just the next iteration.
- Limit my work in progress to three meaningful priorities each day that move long-term goals forward.
- Never stop learning. Growth is a choiceâotherwise, we risk becoming outdated.
Another recommendation I often make is to study flow and communication. These topics are frequently overlooked before, during, and after SAFe implementations, yet they're often the difference between organizations that simply adopt practices and those that truly improve how they deliver value.
The biggest lesson I've learned from working on both successful and struggling transformations is that frameworks alone don't create lasting change. Clear purpose, effective communication, and continuous learning do.
Every implementation teaches me something new, and that's one of the reasons I continue to enjoy this work. The moment we think we've learned everything is the moment we stop improving
